WE CAN'T AFFORD TO IGNORE PAYWALLS
November 10, 2010 at The Hospital Club, London, England
In 2010, the Internet witnessed a resurgence of paywall pricing structures for many online publications, ranging from metered systems to programs in which no content free at all. In some cases, paying subscribers receive added benefits like exclusive content, the ability to chat with journalists directly, and redesigned sites to enhance the reading and interactive experience.
In contrast, The Guardian has chosen a different route for delivering their content, by making it more accessible via a Wordpress plugin allowing entire articles and other types of content to be embedded for free, alongside Guardian advertising. In addition, the Guardian features an open API content project for developers.
With two major publishers pursuing different strategies to monetize their online content, The Webby Awards is proud to feature Janine Gibson, Editor of guardian.co.uk and Robert Shrimsley, Managing Editor of FT.com in a debate about the pros and cons of erecting paywalls around content and news. Milo Yiannopoulos, Technology Columnist for Telegraph.co.uk will moderate the debate.
Milo Yiannopoulos is a technology columnist for Telegraph.co.uk who writes on technology and culture, specialising in privacy, piracy and the UK start-up scene. He has written extensively for the Telegraph and TechCrunch Europe on technology and entrepreneurialism, and contributes to Directors' Guild of America Quarterly (on the legislative challenges of copyright and digital piracy) and Wall Street Journal Europe.
