Judging Process

Establishing Nominees, Winners and Official Honorees

The Webby Award nominees and winners are selected by Members of The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences from the best work entered through the Call for Entries. Evaluated against a number of criteria, the work undergoes a rigorous process to win the coveted Webby Award. Deloitte provides vote tabulation consulting.

Tier I: ROUND 1 JUDGING

How Work is Judged

From the thousands of entries submitted during the Call for Entries, Associate Members of the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences independently inspect each entry and rate them based on their respective judging criteria. Each entry is evaluated by multiple Associate Academy Members. The entries that fare best through this process are included on category specific shortlists and further evaluated by Executive Members of the Academy.

Description of Reviewers

Reviewers are Internet and creative professionals who work with and on the Internet. They have clearly demonstrable familiarity with the category in which they review and have been individually required to produce evidence of such expertise. The reviewers are given different entries in their respective categories for review and they are all barred from reviewing any entry with which they have a conflict of interest, any personal or professional affiliation. The Academy regularly inspects the work of each reviewer for fairness and accuracy.

TIER II: ESTABLISH NOMINEES AND WINNERS - FINAL JUDGING

Description of Associate Academy Members

Executive Academy members with category specific expertise further evaluate the shortlisted entries based on the appropriate Website, Interactive Advertising & Media or Film & Video criteria, and eventually cast ballots to determine Webby Honorees, Nominees and Webby Winners. In the event of a tie, the Chairperson of any individual category casts the tie-breaking vote. Executive Academy members may not vote in any category in which they have a conflict of interest. Deloitte provides vote tabulation consulting.

Due to the fact that only five (5) nominees, including one (1) winner, can be chosen for each category, other entries that are worthy of recognition are eligible to receive special commendation from the Academy as Official Honorees. No more than 20% of entries can receive the Official Honoree distinction.

Description of Executive Academy Members

Members of The Executive Academy are visionaries, evangelists and luminaries who have catalyzed great achievements on the Internet or have demonstrated extraordinary talent in a traditional medium. These Internet experts faithfully represent the past and future of new media; they carry the voice of the Industry. The traditional masters possess an understanding of their fields that transcend the new medium. Their minds speak powerfully towards excellence and value within their field -- advertising, art, film, science, or sports, for example -- online and off.

DISCLOSURE

With all the connection and interconnection online, and because we not only acknowledge excellence, but we associate with it, the potential for conflicts of interest often arises. We take these conflicts very seriously. We do everything in our power to minimize occurrences of conflicts while ensuring that the best work is recognized.

The Webby Awards and The Academy staff does not select the nominees, the winners, or influence the judges in any way. We do select a diverse body of judges who we feel is objective, respected and knowledgeable in their category. The nominees and winners are entirely in the hands of these Academy Members who select and vote on them through an independent process. Deloitte provides vote tabulation consulting.

Judges may not vote for any entry with which they have a conflict of interest; such situations are closely monitored, depending on both the personal integrity of the judges and various sources of knowledge to police such activity. Deloitte provides vote tabulation consulting.
