THE CHALLENGE

Mozilla is a longtime leader in the developer community, but when we encountered them they had yet to establish themselves in the AI landscape. Our brief was ambitious and vague: chart a course to an MVP product experience that positioned Mozilla at the center of the open-source AI renaissance. And we had just six weeks to do it.

THE SOLUTION

We found our answer in the community: developers inside and outside of Mozilla who were already working hard to bring open, privacy-focused AI into the mainstream. We realized the best thing we could build was a digital home to lift up their work and amplify their impact beyond Discord servers and GitHub repos. With an eight-week build timeline and zero margin for error, we chose proven technology to support cutting-edge content: WordPress on WP Engine, Timber for templating, and Tailwind for styles. Our editors were building out stories in our second sprint, and we knew whatever traffic the news cycle threw at the site wouldn't overwhelm it.

THE RESULTS

Mozilla Builders was unanimously embraced by the Mozilla community and the broader open-source AI world. The site was nominated for a Webby Award for Best Website in Corporate Responsibility, and its lasting impact can be found in our continued relationship with Mozilla. To their community, Mozilla continues to be a signal of hope—proving through action that a different future is still worth fighting for.

Mike Burns, Chief Technology Officer, Upstatement

Our strategy for a project like this is simple — choose proven technology. As cutting-edge as the work featured on Mozilla Builders is, we wanted the technology supporting it to be tried and true. WordPress and WP Engine let us get editors creating content in our second sprint and gave us confidence that whatever traffic came our way, the site could handle it.
