Meet Professor Crawford
An expert in legal and technological matters, it is our great pleasure to count Susan P. Crawford among our Judging Academy.
Civic-minded and outspoken, Susan Crawford is an expert on the Internet who lends her knowledge and advisory leadership to The Webby Awards. Here’s a 5-course-primer on her qualifications.
The John A. Reilly Clinical Professor at Harvard Law School Crawford also co-directs the Berkman Center—a research organization that explores and studies the Internet.
How does such a busy woman balance teaching, writing, speaking engagements, research—her innumerable duties and requests? The viola.
While studying for her J.D. at Yale, Crawford was the principal violist in the Yale Symphony Orchestra. On her personal site, she describes performing as a reprieve from technology’s sway: “It’s nice to have it here, and it gives me something to do that is fully analog. Wave forms. “
She served in President Obama’s administration as Special Assistant to the President for Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (2009) and co-led the FCC transition team between the Bush and Obama administrations. (Maybe she can be the first female president of the Internet *cough* looking at you Alexis Ohanian *cough*)
Crawford is also a trusted advisor of NYC’s mayors: she’s served as a member of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Advisory Council on Technology and Innovation and is now a member of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Broadband Task Force.
P.S. Can you spot “father of the Internet” and fellow IADAS member Vint Cerf in the background of the above photo?
Her two books—The Responsive City & Captive Audience—and reported essays and articles, illustrate Crawford’s expansive knowledge on the Internet as an infrastructural element as well as a technological marvel with somewhat porous laws and boundaries.
