Q: Can you describe your project and the concept behind it? A: This California HVIP project focused on motivating and making it easier for fleets to make clean vehicle purchase decisions, supporting the ultimate goal of transforming the California commercial vehicle industry toward zero-emissions. The site needed to clearly convey the program’s purpose, benefits and participation details while allowing users to find eligible vehicles and dealers.

Q: Tell us about your initial moodboard, wireframe, or prototype. How did things change throughout the process? A: We had a clear vision for the site with our partners at CA HVIP from the beginning. Our research and discovery phase was extensive and facilitates establishing a strong foundation for the rest of the project. The final web product is exactly as planned during those early stages.

Q: What influenced your chosen technical approach, and how did it go beyond past methods? A: Our technical approach is based on the unique scope of work presented to us by our partner. In this case, the new website experience California HVIP was looking for was clean, modern and efficient. There were no integrations, financial tools or eCommerce, but instead lots of new content published frequently. As such we stuck with open-source technology for ease of use, and to facilitate ongoing updates, accessibility and compliance.

When did you experience a breakthrough or an "a-ha" moment during this project?

We spoke to real program participants to understand their thought process when they engage with CA HVIP, then modeled the site experience to follow those thought patterns and streamlined the journey from landing to conversion/completion. One specific "a-ha" moment was deciding to include clear incentive amounts for each vehicle to drive significant interest.

Q: What web technologies, tools, and resources did you use to develop this? A: Adobe XD, WordPress, and HTML5. In addition accessibility, performance and security were woven into our process from the very beginning.

Q: How did you balance your own creative ideas and technical capabilities with a fair representation of the client’s brand? A: We have separate phases that allow us to focus in each of those areas (user experience and visual design for example). We then review our options via close, ongoing collaboration with our partner to determine which tactical solutions will provide the greatest impact and achieve a brand's goals.

Q: How did the final product meet or exceed your expectations? A: The final web product still continues to outperform compared to the previous website. As just one example, over $50 million worth of incentives were used up within minutes once announced live on the new website. CA HVIP continues to break financial milestones for incentives accepted in record time.

Q: Why is this an exciting time to create new digital experiences? How does your team fit into this? A: We've been creating digital experiences from scratch for over a decade, and the work continues to evolve and become more interesting. There are infinite ways to create a new web product or business solution. When creative ingenuity is the only limitation, it's easy to continue finding new levels of satisfaction from our digital creations.
