Best Moments at The 21st Annual Webbys

Watch the best moments from the 21st Annual Webby Awards featuring Joel McHale, Solange, Buzzfeed, Steve Buscemi, Louis C.K., the Women's March, Gillian Anderson, and more!

Joel McHale Takes Us Back

In his hilarious opener for the 21st Annual Webby Awards, host Joel McHale harkened back to the first-ever Webbys and some of those heated early contests the world will never forget…

Van Jones Sees Purple

Special Achievement honoree Van Jones of the video series “The Messy Truth” used his 5-Word Speech to ask us to look past red and blue and inspire unity across political lines. (Bridging divides. That’s so like him.)

Mulder and Scully, Together Again

In an unintentional show of solidarity, David Duchovny showed up with his arm in a sling to present the Webby Best Actress Award to his former X-Files co-star Gillian Anderson for her role in The Fall, who took the stage on crutches to give her 5-Word Speech.

Merriam-Webster Came Armed

In one of The Webby Awards most words-nerdsiest moments, New York Times puzzlemaster Will Shortz presented the Webby to Merriam-Webster for—as he accurately put it—the dictionary’s “savage Twitter presence.”

Internet Archive Wins for Lifetime Achievement

Brewster Kahle, Alexis Rossi, and Tracey Jaquith—donning hats fit for archivists—accepted the Webby Lifetime Achievement award for Internet Archive’s commitment to making the world’s knowledge available online, and preserving the history of the Internet itself.

Louis CK and Steve Buscemi Share Brotherly Love

After a super sweet, loving introduction from his co-star (and 2012 Webby Person of the Year) Louis C.K., Steve Buscemi, accepting the Best Actor Webby for his role in Horace and Pete, offered a deep dose of love right back: “Gratitude. Honor. Louis. Love you.” <3

Buzzfeed's Ben Smith Sets Things Straight

Accepting the Webby for Best News App, Buzzfeed’s Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith had these 5 Words to offer up (surely, to no one person or president in particular…): “No, you’re fake news.”

RIP Fake News!

Speaking of “fake news,” every year The Webbys makes a point to kill something on the Internet we’ve all had enough of. This year, it was indeed fake news that bit the digital dust. #RIP – you won’t be missed.

We Welcomed Podcast Royalty

This was The Webbys first year honoring Podcasts as a dedicated category. So we made a moment out of it! Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad and Robert Kruwich turned up to drop some podcast knowledge and present Webbys to three of our esteemed Podcast Winners, Jenna Wortham and Wesley Morris (NYT’s Still Processing), Dan Taberski (Missing Richard Simmons), and John Moe (Hilarious World of Depression).

The Sweet Sound of Solange

The room erupted when renowned artist and MacArthur genius Kara Walker showed up to present the Webby for Artist of the Year to Solange—who then treated us by singing her 5-Word Speech. Swoon.

The Women's March Brings Us to Our Feet

In a moving closing moment, Women’s March national co-chairs Linda Sarsour, Bob Bland, and Carmen Perez accepted the Webby for Social Movement of the Year, bringing the room to its feet with these 5 words: “Women, look what we did!” Hell. Yes.
