MOBILE BOOM SPURS NEW CATEGORIES FOR 13th ANNUAL WEBBY AWARDS
From Mobile Applications to GPS Innovation, New Categories Reflect
Mobile Web’s Growing Impact on Everyday Life
New York, NY (September 23, 2008)- Reflecting the mobile Web’s increasing influence on everyday life, The 13th Annual Webby Awards kicked-off its call for entries today with a suite of new awards honoring innovation in categories such as mobile applications and GPS technology.
Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including Websites, online film and video, interactive advertising, and mobile Websites.
To enter work in the mobile categories, please visit www.webbyawards.com. The early entry deadline is October 31, 2008.
The new mobile awards include: Best Mobile Applications, Best Mobile Experimentation & Innovation, Best Integrated Mobile Experience, Best Use of Mobile Video, and Best Use of GPS or Location Technology.
“Whether you are on an iPhone, Blackberry or a Nokia device, GPS and mobile applications are an integral part of the mobile experience, giving users a vast range of services we didn’t see a year ago,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. “We’re looking forward to honoring the innovators who are pushing the medium in exciting new directions.”
The 12th Annual Webby Awards received a record 10,000 entries from over 60 countries. The awards season was capped by a star-studded June gala showcasing an influential group of Internet luminaries including Stephen Colbert, David Byrne, and Black Eyed Peas front man will.i.am.
At the 2008 Webby Awards, winners in the mobile categories included ESPN.com Wireless, New York Times, NBC’s “Heroes”, Chase SMS Banking, and Zannel.
The Webby Awards is presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550-person judging academy whose members include Vinton Cerf, R/GA’s Chief Bob Greenberg, “Simpson’s” creator Matt Groening, Arianna Huffington, and Harvey Weinstein.
Nominees for the 13th Annual Webby Awards will be announced in April 2009, and winners will be honored at a gala ceremony in New York City in June 2009.
