New York, NY (April 14, 2009) – Reflecting the mobile Web’s increasing influence on everyday life, The 13th Annual Webby Awards today unveiled nominees in twelve categories recognizing mobile achievement from a record pool of entries, including a new award honoring the booming field of mobile applications.

Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet, including Websites, online film and video, interactive advertising, and mobile Websites.

Nominees in the mobile categories range from global heavyweights like NBC Olympics Mobile (Best Use of Mobile Video), NYTimes.com (Listings & Updates; News), and BBC News (News) to breakouts like Living Social (Social Networking), Please Fix the iPhone (Entertainment) and Britglyph (Experimental & Innovation).

Some of the biggest names in the mobile industry earned nods in the new Best Mobile Applications category, including: Amazon Mobile; Nimbuzz; Salesforce.com Mobile; Skyfire Mobile Web Browser; USA Today iPhone; and American Airlines. Nominees for Best Use of GPS or Location Technology, another new category, include Adidas Marathon Run Tracker; CareerBuilder.com iPhone Application; Nokia vine; Palringo Local; and Sony Ericsson “Find It”.

A full list of all nominees can be found at: www.webbyawards.com/nominees.

Unlike other awards shows, where only judges choose the winners, The Webby Awards also give the public an opportunity to decide who will take home a Webby. Starting today through April 30, fans can cast their votes in The Webby People’s Voice Awards at http://pv.webbyawards.com

“Over the next decade, it’s estimated that a billion new users will come to the Web for the first time through mobile devices,” said David-Michel Davies. “This year’s nominees are the innovators and pioneers shaping the future of this increasingly influential medium.”

This year’s winners will be announced on May 5th, 2009 and honored at a star-studded ceremony in New York City on June 8th. The gala, hosted by Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers, will showcase the Webby’s famous five-word speeches. Past headline-grabbing speechmakers include Al Gore (“Please don’t recount this vote”) and Stephen Colbert (“Me. Me. Me. Me. Me.”)

The 13th Annual Webby Awards received over 10,000 entries from all 50 states and over 60 countries worldwide.
