Meet the Inaugural Responsible Technology Winners

From addressing gaps in physical accessibility to creating inclusive resources, the inaugural Webby Responsible Tech Winners are leading the charge to a more conscious future.

We’re at a turning point. In the past year, we’ve noticed a shift towards adopting a more responsible and human-centric system across technology. More and more digital platforms are growing mindful of the kind of impact they want to have on users. Websites are becoming more energy-efficient—so are the devices we use to access them.

This year, we introduced a new suite of dedicated honors recognizing Responsible Tech projects as part of a new initiative with Omidyar Network to inspire our community of creators to build more responsible and inclusive digital ecosystems. Below, we present the inaugural Responsible Technology Winners who wielded tech for good across Websites and Mobile Sites. Each in its own way, these projects have harnessed digital technology to increase inclusivity and information accessibility, and to create sustainable solutions.

These projects are wielding tech for good.

Staybl by Havas New York, Accessible Technology Winner

Using mobile devices while experiencing tremors can be extremely difficult. That’s where Staybl comes in. It’s a browser that adjusts interfaces for tremors. It contains the webpage in a buffer zone, allowing the window to remain stable despite tremors. It also features customizable options for all intensities and a thoughtfully designed menu with an optimized font and layout.

Tightening current privacy regulations starts with identifying existing loopholes like in *Privacy Not Included. It’s a database tracking the safety of the tech we use daily. From home devices to apps, it rates the state of privacy protection in everything digital. 

 

See My Skin by Edelman, Responsible Innovation Winner

Less than 6% of image-based searches on skin conditions include people of color. This discrepancy can lead to misdiagnosis or a complete lack of one, leading Vaseline and Hued to partner up to create See My Skin. It’s the only digital archive showing how various conditions look on Brown and Black skin to better inform BIPOC on skin concerns to follow up on.

See My Skin is also a participant in this year’s Crafted with Code, a collaborative showcase curated by The Webby Awards and WP Engine, highlighting Webby-recognized websites and the inspiring stories behind the sites. 

 

Flock Freight, Sustainable Technology Winner

The massive carbon footprint of the shipping and freight industry needs to be fixed. Flock Freight is working to mitigate the impact. They combine shipments through an algorithm-based carpooling system to ensure resources are used efficiently. This reduces CO2 emissions by minimizing handling and optimizing the transportation needed.
