Facebook’s early Webby nods in Social Networking marked the rise of an online public square that made the Internet truly social. Born on college campuses, it reached Webby interns before executives. By the time it launched publicly in September 2006, it was already a phenomenon, and eight months later it picked up a Webby People’s Voice Award. Instagram, which accepted Webby Breakout of the Year in 2012 the same month it was acquired by Meta, gave us selfies, stories, and the infinite scroll, and marked the moment with the five-word speech, “This here deserves no filter.” WhatsApp became the global messaging platform, connecting families, communities, and businesses across borders with simplicity and scale. Meta’s success famously brought challenges few could have predicted at the start, yet its mission to connect the world has remained constant. Today Meta is leading immersive technology forward with Quest, while also advancing AI research and generative features across its apps. Meta turned social media into a global habit, and today it remains the company pushing the boundaries of what connection looks like.
