NBC taught the Internet to quote, clip, and share comedy. Recognized by The Webby Awards as early as 1998, NBC.com showed how quickly the network embraced the web. Saturday Night Live’s digital shorts in 2005, from “Lazy Sunday” to “Dick in a Box,” made sketches viral on NBC.com and YouTube, and earned Lorne Michaels the 2008 Webby Film & Video Lifetime Achievement Award for architecting comedy’s digital shift. In 2009, Jimmy Fallon was named Webby Person of the Year for building late night for the web with blogs, tweets, and fan polls, captured in his five-word speech: “Thank God Conan got promoted.” NBC proved scripted comedy could live online too, with The Office webisodes in 2007, Heroes extensions in 2008, and 30 Rock: Frank vs. Lutz in 2011. And with its streaming coverage of the Olympics, NBC showed how live global events could scale online. The result is a lasting template: Must See TV became must-share comedy, and the Internet learned to laugh in clips.
