Not only is Jay Shetty one of our most recent judges to join The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), but he’s also a life coach and podcast host. He has used his platform to share the wisdom he’s gained throughout his life, especially from his time as a monk. His insights into life have guided so many through his books, life coaching courses, and podcast, On Purpose. The London native recently met with us to talk a little about his background and how he was able to build such a meaningful connection with his audience. He talked to us about what makes podcasting his favorite media and the aspects of it that he appreciates the most. He also shared that he’s most excited to see the creativity that podcasting as a medium lends during this year’s 27th Annual Webby Awards.
For those who don’t know, tell us a little about your background.
I was born and raised in London, England and have always been fascinated by human behavior and the mind. I love biographies, movies and tv shows based on true stories because I feel there is so much to learn from extreme and unique experiences. I was fortunate enough to spend 3 years living as a monk which has so deeply inspired so much of the work I do today.
What particular expertise are you bringing to the Academy?
I believe that in order to be a successful creator, one should also be a consumer and student in the space. Other than listening to podcasts as a hobby of mine, I am constantly listening to podcasts in order to grow as a professional and learn from my peers and audience. I am excited to bring these learnings and knowledge of the space to the Webby awards!
What are you most looking forward to about reviewing this year’s Webby Awards entries?
I am looking forward to seeing the ingenuity and creativity that different hosts and podcast’s have brought to the industry. I love discovering new voices using their platforms for a higher purpose and finding unique ways to communicate their message. I am honored to be a part of the decision process.

Jay Shetty, On Purpose
Can you put into words what it is about podcasts that gives listeners a one-of-a-kind experience?
You are in peoples cars, ears, phones in their most private moments, which allows you to really form a connection with the guest without distraction. Podcasts are recorded in a bubble with minimal people around, so you are really able to have a deep conversation where people are able to be open and their true selves. The listeners are able to hear a conversation in its purest form. It is such an intimate experience for both sides.
What does it take for a podcast to be considered best-in-class?
A genuine connection with your community. A real chemistry and rapport where people feel their questions are answered, their emotions are understood, a place they feel seen and heard.
What podcast or piece of audio has most recently inspired you, and why?
It’s not recent but it moves me every time. Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford is my favorite audio clip of all time. I listened to it every day for 9 months and it changed my life. He said “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life … Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become.” These words were incredibly powerful to me pushing forward with my own aspirations.
What is a piece of audio you are most proud to have worked on?
It’s always a tough answer since I have had the opportunity to speak to so many incredible people. However, I think it has to be Kobe Bryant. I had the great honor to speak to him three months before his tragic passing. During the On Purpose interview, Kobe spoke about his perspective on finding stillness and accepting emotions as they come in order to avoid being controlled by emotions. It was incredibly powerful and a very special experience for me.
What emerging technology or trend do you think will have the greatest impact on the creative industry?
Democratization of access to creation, you no longer need to be found and discovered, you can build it on your own. People have freedom and autonomy to go after their goals. They no longer have to wait for others to start making their dreams come true.
Bonus: What would be your dream podcast to join as a one-off host?
Conan’s podcast. Now that I think about it… nobody has approached me to do comedy yet.
