Internet History
R/GA taught the Internet that design, code, and story belong on the same team and that a digital agency could think in terms of platforms, not just campaigns. Nike+ was the proof. In 2006 a pedometer-style sensor in a Nike shoe paired with an iPod and a website turned runs into data, goals, and community, then evolved into Nike+ GPS and FuelBand, making movement a daily digital ritual. NIKEiD, a 2009 Webby honoree, made mass customization feel native to the browser. “Love Has No Labels” in 2016 became one of the web’s most shared PSAs, and its skeleton-screen reveal won multiple Webbys. Beats Music showed how a brand rooted in hardware could translate culture into algorithm-driven, curated listening experiences. The same instincts powered cultural experiments from Volvo’s XC90 VR launch and the “Straight Outta” meme generator to Beats’ storytelling, and Verizon’s “Catch My iPhone.” Named Webby Agency of the Year in 2009, 2016, and 2022, R/GA showed brands how to build platforms people use and stories they share.
