In January 2017, BuzzFeed published a controversial 35-page intelligence dossier. It was a huge story, but many news organizations refused to release the document at all. Ben Smith is the man who made the call to publish first.

We sit down with Ben to talk about the decision to make the document available but also about what it was like to defend his decision to his peers. We also discuss the state of fake news, the nature of all the leaks and anonymous sources coming out of Washington, and how the BuzzFeed newsroom and its 250 reporters and editors operate in the Trump era.

It feels again like we’re in a total crisis. People are obsessed with it.”
— Ben Smith Editor-in-Chief, BuzzFeed
