14th ANNUAL WEBBY AWARDS NOMINEES ANNOUNCED
Zach Galifianikas, David After Dentist, foursquare, Twitter
Texts from Last Night, Hulu, Mashable, and ColbertNation Vie for Internet’s Top Honor
NYTimes.com leads with 15 nods, followed by BBC (9), CollegeHumor(6), The Onion (6), Next New Networks (6)
New York, NY (APRIL 13, 2010) – Twitter, foursquare, Zach Galifianakis, David After Dentist, Texts from Last Night, Hulu, Mashable, and ColbertNation are among the Internet and pop culture superstars nominated today for The 14th Annual Webby Awards, the Internet’s top honor.
While Academy judges like Martha Stewart, David Bowie, and Arianna Huffington will select Webby Awards winners, millions of people around the world will also help decide who takes home a Webby by voting in The Webby People’s Voice Awards. Fans have until April 29th to vote at http://webby.aol.com.
All winners will be celebrated at a star-studded ceremony in New York City on June 14th, where they must deliver five-word speeches in the tradition of past victors like Al Gore (“Please don’t recount this vote.”) and Jimmy Fallon (“Thank God Conan got promoted”). The speeches will once again be broadcast on the Webby Awards YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/TheWebbyAwards), which attracted a major global audience last year.
The ceremony will also mark the culmination of Internet Week New York 2010, a weeklong festival celebrating digital culture that’s expected to draw 20,000 people to over 100 events throughout New York City.
The increasing dominance of mobile devices and apps looms large among this year’s finalists, with Twitter (Best Practices, Best Social Networking Website), foursquare (Best Mobile Social Networking Platform), Texts from Last Night (Best Mobile Entertainment), and “Rage” (Best Online Film & Video Drama), a movie starring Jude Law, Eddie Izzard, and Judi Dench that became the first feature film to premiere on mobile phones, all earning nods.
Other Webby nominees with star power include: “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis,” The Hangover star’s talk show that has featured such guests as Charlize Theron and Ben Stiller; Funny or Die’s “Protect Insurance Companies PSA” with Will Ferrell and Jon Hamm; LStudio’s “Web Therapy II” starring Lisa Kudrow and appearances by Jane Lynch, Rashida Jones, and Courtney Cox; and “Wainy Days” with Amanda Peet and David Wain. And, in what is surely to be one of the most closely watched races, Lindsay Lohan, nominated for Funny or Die’s “Lindsay Lohan’s eHarmony Profile,” is up against “David After Dentist,” the amateur flip cam phenomenon, for Best Viral Video.
“What makes The Webby Awards so much fun is that fans help select the winners, and now that they can vote on our partner networks like AOL and YouTube, we’re expecting more people than ever to participate,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of The Webby Awards. “Over the next three weeks, we’re going to see who has what it takes to win the battle for Web supremacy.”
14th Annual Webby Awards highlights include:
Multiple nominees: Nominees earning multiple nods range from first-time nominees like Crackle (5), Wonderwall.com (2), and Auto-Tune the News (2) to Internet powerhouses like NYTimes.com (15), BBC (9), CollegeHumor (6), The Onion (6), Next New Networks (6), Funny or Die (5), NPR (5), Cheezburger Network (4), and Mashable (3).
