The 2022 Webby Production Industry Index

Video has evolved from moving images at the pictures, to commercials on TV screens, to YouTube content on computers, to quick clips on mobile devices, and now to immersive experiences through AR & VR. No matter the format, it’s a medium that has adapted to evolving devices and production strategies.

Companies across the world are having fun with the video and taking advantage of the creativity it lends. The 4th Annual Webby Production Industry Index is a roundup of the top five companies who have done just that and more, using their innovation to push video out into new frontiers. Take your time exploring the projects that earned them top awards during the 26th Annual Webby Awards.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Media.Monks snagged our top spot this year by being named the 2022 Webby Production Company of the Year because of their one Webbby win, two People’s Voice wins, six nominations, and eight projects that were honored.
  • User experiences are moving to the virtual world in droves with Active Theory’s Sundance New Frontier and The Game Awards Microverse being some examples of celebrations taking place in the virtual sphere.
  • An awareness of social impact is an important theme that was seen in a lot of the video projects we received this year, BWGTBLD GmbH’s Seawatch – Human Rights Are #Non-Negotiable being a terrific example of how to advocate for change on digital.

BREAKING DOWN THE WINS

2. Active Theory

Active Theory’s focus lies in refining user experiences on digital platforms. They do exactly that by applying their in-house specialized toolset to create websites, apps, installations, and VR & AR experiences that take users on wonderfully designed journeys. They’ve created experiences for Rick and Morty, Our Planet, Harry Potter, and Magic Leap

They’ve even worked with Sundance Film Festival–which most definitely snagged a Webby for its innovation. The premier film festival was left wondering how it can immerse its audience in fresh up-and-coming features and directors during the height of the pandemic. The solve? An XR space called New Frontier. In this new cyberspace, fans experienced the magic of indie movies from the comfort of their own homes. Here’s a roundup of Active Theory’s digital work that captivated the Webbys.

A project of theirs that rocked the corporate social responsibility boat was New Girl created for Nike’s Play New campaign.
