"The continuous evolution of users’ digital behavior is exactly why there is a need to create new experiences that are more encompassing and encourage the audience to be present. The exciting part is that users are now ready." Gucci & AQuest

Q: Can you describe your project and the concept behind it?

A: To celebrate the worldwide launch of Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia Eau de Parfum, Gucci created an immersive digital experience where users can discover the scent’s ingredients and enjoy an Augmented Reality world that recalls the fragrance’s #FloraFantasy advertising campaign — a fanciful universe inspired by the world of anime.

Q: What influenced your chosen technical approach, and how did it go beyond past methods?

A: We combined 3D elements with 2D features to guarantee a fluid web-based navigation and to make sure the shift between the various environments of important dimensions would unfold smoothly. The solution was, then, to create 2D illustrations applying a parallax technique to add three-dimensionality and use a frame-by-frame technique for animations to recall the project’s overall mood.

When did you experience a breakthrough or an "a-ha" moment during this project?

Being able to find the right balance to design the animation of the transition scene between environments, as each petal particle was made to code. That moment was an important milestone as we were then able to polish the following loader phase to access the next scene.

Q: What web technologies, tools, and resources did you use to develop this?

A: The technology used to develop the platform is vue.js, while the graphic elements and prototypes were designed with Adobe XD. Photoshop was used for the illustrations, along with After Effects for the animations. We operated on Maya and Substance for the scenes and 3D objects, and, lastly, with model-viewer we handled AR.

Q: How did you balance your own creative ideas and technical capabilities with a fair representation of the client’s brand?

A: The digital assets perfectly follow the brand’s campaign guidelines, and the platform is a mere extension and amplification of the creative concept. The advantage is the combination of the creative and technical expertise we apply in every work, which allows us to express our creative side making sure it’s supported by technical capabilities that are able to make it come alive.

Q: How did the final product meet or exceed your expectations?

A: The development of the platform did not just meet our expectations, it exceeded them. In terms of R&D, we were enthusiastic about succeeding in combining 2D and 3D techniques together.

Q: Why is this an exciting time to create new digital experiences? How does your team fit into this?

A: The continuous evolution of users’ digital behavior is exactly why there is a need to create new experiences that are more encompassing and encourage the audience to be present. The exciting part is that users are now ready. A platform like Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia is what they are looking for: a journey that incites one to discover and to become an active member of the experience.
